Expanding our Prayer
I am fairly certain that across the Unity movement, the most
frequently discussed and practiced principle is that of PRAYER. A
very basic understanding of prayer is reflected in a quote from
Papa Charlie which is our affirmation this month:
"Prayer is the most highly accelerated mind-action and
through it I now link my mind with God-Mind..."
Years ago I heard a little poem about experiences and circumstances of prayer.
I remember the essence, but unfortunately I do not remember the exact wording.
The verse spoke about prayer on bended knee and with arms outstretched; with
words and in silence; in a group and alone. The punch line was that the most
effective and powerful prayer ever experienced by the author was when he fell off
a ladder and was hanging upside down twenty feet above the ground!
Prayer is very personal and very situational. Scripture encourages us to Pray
without ceasing. Obviously we cannot live every minute of our lives on our
knees or with eyes closed or in uninterrupted dialogue with God. However, in
consciousness we can maintain an ongoing connection with our Source. One
intent of this month of Expanding our Prayer is to sharpen our skill and deepen
our awareness in this continuing communion with Spirit.
There are countless books written about the practice and experience of prayer.
Many have to do with specific techniques and methods of effective prayer. Some
promise THE way of connecting with God. Those that call to my attention are the
ones that offer A way of connecting with God. I am pleased that a good friend and
colleague of mine who will be with us on August 7. Rev. Sharon Connors has
written a wonderful book called, Adventures in Prayer. Sharon shares her very
personal journey in discovering the deeper realms of experiential prayer. There is
more information on her visit and presentations inside the newsletter.
As with any discipline, a community experience of prayer multiplies the
inherent power. So let up be fervent in our personal prayers and know that we are
also joining in community. You will be hearing more about the event next month,
but September 8 is the 12th Annual Unity World Day of Prayer. What perfect
timing that this significant event centered on prayer follows our month of
Expanding our Prayer! (Just remember there are no accidents.)
We can affirm together as we experience and share our communion with
Creator:
"Prayer is the most highly accelerated mind-action and
through it I now link my mind with God-Mind..."
Blessings
