Unity History in Colorado Springs

The first Unity group began meeting in 1922 in the McIntyre Building and was know as the "Home of Truth", with Mrs. Maude B. Clark as their Leader.  Her son, Dr. De Groat, continued her work and was followed by Peter Kontek in 1926.

In 1929, Mrs. Mabel Beach arrived to lead the group .  They moved into the De Graff Building on N. Tejon Street, and became known as the Unity Truth Center.  In 1950 the first Ordained Minister, Ann Winstead, arrived to assume the leadership of Unity in Colorado Springs and the church purchased property at 1307 W. Colorado Avenue.      Charles A. Neal was assigned by Unity School of Christianity to Colorado Springs in 1958.  About the same time, the church moved to 317 E. Boulder Street.  Under Mr. Neal's leadership, the church grew rapidly and added a Sunday School and Youth Of Unity departments.  Mr. Neal also gave Unity a presence with the Council of Churches and Ministerial Alliance.

Mr. Neal was succeeded in 1961 by  Carole M. Guntel, who continued the growth begun by her predecessor.  The former parsonage became a Church School building and a 24-hour Dial-A-Prayer service was instituted. At the same time, the church adopted a name that continues to this day: Unity Church In The Rockies.

In 1974, while Mr. Bill Carpenter was minister, the Boulder Street church was sold and the congregation move to 627 N. Circle Drive.  Meanwhile, the congregation had come into possession of 11acres of land on Eagle Rock Road east of N. Nevada avenue.  The congregation hoped to build a large church and conference center there one day.
